War godmothers were women who volunteered to correspond with soldiers and prisoners of war during the First World War. The letters and packages sent by these women provided crucial moral and emotional support for soldiers struggling to survive in the harsh conditions of incarceration or trench warfare. The practice of War godmothers was also taken up during the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War.
